A friend and fellow momma recently sparked a conversation on Facebook about Beyonce’s post-partum bod reveal. Basically she filmed her killer bod, it seems B bounced back in record time after birth. That scenario doesn’t sit well with many of us. Like the pressure is ON to follow suit & perform.
Some commenters accuse Beyonce personally of putting on the pressure. Something she and other celebrities seem to have been doing a lot over the years.
I certainly believe its the other way around; society is the one putting pressure on women, including AND especially celebrities in the spotlight.
Women in general need to fit a certain image. It’s the difference between having society clap for you or bash you. And we know with all the mommy judging out there, celebrities that go against the norm will feel the bashing from one side and massive applause from the other. It’s no surprise regular women also deal with these expectations.
Mommy judging, body shaming, fit pregnancy and the scores of expectations put on woman bearing children is at an all time high. There’s no arguing that it’s unhealthy to have such a view, but this is also where the issue ends, beyond there being a societal expectation, we choose. We are the enforcers, YOU are the one in charge.
It is up to us to allow it to become a widely accepted benchmark or not.
A lot of times people pressure themselves to unhealthy degrees because their image is all they believe they have. Sadly, this is a growing problem.
Aside from that, it’s too easy to hide behind these expectations and not take responsibility for your choices.
Bible says the wise counts the cost…
Becoming a mother, birthing a child is a choice, and it comes with natural consequences. Those are things that happen out in nature, regardless of who you are and where you live. Mostly biological, affected by lifestyle habits, culture etc… bottom-line is they are known in advanced and are the cost of bringing a child into the world.
Because we are somewhat unwilling to embrace all that naturally comes with birth, a whole industry and culture is born around getting rid, preventing and masking of those natural effects.
We point at them as painful, teach the masses to want to avoid them and then corporations bank on products, procedures and customs that make money.
Corporations are simply there, exploiting our own unwillingness to take responsibility and sleep in the bed we’ve made to let nature do what it does in it’s own time.
While I think it’s unhealthy to live for the expectations of others, I also decide what I agree with or not. You can too! Next time you see something that could make you feel pressured remember YOU have a choice.
Choose to count the cost, choose to live not by expectations of man, but those of God. And you know what those are.
